Here it comes again ……

Ok, ok, ok – I know it’s been a long time since I last blogged.

I have slowed down to suit the new deadline for my sculpture exhibition at the National Maritime Museum Cornwall (which is early November). That’s no excuse, I know, but I am struggling with loosing the momentum I had built up. So here goes the big wind-up to a decent work schedule once more.

This weekend I have been working on Sculpture number 6.

DSCN5549

This is just half of it, partially painted and assembled on a threaded rod. Each panel and spacer has been hand-cut from birch plywood and then hand painted.

I’m not sure about this one. I haven’t made anything like it before, it has taken hours and months of my time and I’m not sure about the final effect.

The first picture shows half of it sitting on its bottom. It will be horizontal. It will look more fish-like eventually. The 82 panels are separated by spacers and will be painted red on the other side. The idea is that as the viewer walks around the sculpture, not only will it change shape but also change colour too.

It’s based on this little baby which is a model for a lifeboat and is found in the NMMC.

Not much resemblance anymore.

I can only persevere with this to see how it turns out because it has taken so long to get this far. Maybe I’ll be pleasantly surprised??

Meanwhile, since January I have been developing ideas for a much larger sculpture which might be commissioned by the Museum. My next blog will show off the maquette I made for this.
